The Sonoma Valley Citizen’s Academy provides residents with an inside look at local law enforcement. The seven week
academy is designed to give participants an overview of our office, policies and procedures– with a specialized focus
on our unique Sonoma Valley law enforcement model.
During the academy, students will learn about police ethics, communications, crime prevention, criminal law, the
correctional system, all of our investigation units including: CSI, Coroner, Violent Crimes, Domestic Violence/Sexual
Assault, Narcotics, and much more. Academy classes are taught by Sheriff's Office executives and veteran personnel
and participants are encouraged to ask questions.
The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office and the Sonoma Police Department hope there will be a greater awareness and
understanding of law enforcement's role in the community through the education provided by the Citizen's Academy.
The curriculum and teaching methods are similar to the traditional police academy, but the weekly sessions are not
designed to make the participant a peace officer.
The Sonoma Valley Citizen's Academy is seven weeks. Classes meet Wednesday evenings from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at
the Sonoma Police Department 175 First Street West in Sonoma. We will have one all day class in Santa Rosa on a
Saturday for equipment demonstrations and tour the Main Office and the Jail.
